The construction market is a major driver of China’s economy. From 2002 to 2006, the total output of China’s construction industry increased from $245 billion to $542 billion, a 120% annual growth rate. During the 11th Five Year period (2006-2010), the plan for total construction is estimated to reach 2 billion square meters each year. According to the Industrialization Report issued by the Ministry of Construction’s Promotion Center for Housing, by 2010, China will have built 80 billion square meters of new housing. By 2020, estimates are 205 billion square meters. Presently, China’s construction industry includes 40 million employees, 15,545 design institutes, 104,297 engineering enterprises, and 6,665 construction supervision firms (as of Aug 2007).

In recent years, the progress made on petroleum, energy, aviation, automobile, heavy machinery, construction, especially in shipbuilding industry, promotes the development of steel & iron production and offers a great impetus to China’s metal trades / welding production market. According to the statistics from the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI), China's shipbuilding output exceeded 12 million deadweight tonnages (DWT) in 2005, accounting for 18 percent of world’s total. China, outpacing Japan, has become the second largest shipbuilder in the world (after South Korea). Many are now estimating that, by 2015, China will have 35% of the world shipbuilding market and will become the largest shipbuilding nation in the world.
